Complex Historical Data Migration for a Global Travel Website

Client Overview

Client hosts multiple large travel websites for consumers and small businesses. Headquartered on the west coast, their websites are primarily travel fare aggregators and travel meta-search engines that are used to book airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, cruise ships, and vacation packages.

Project Scope

The ‘Hotel Collect’ project was aimed at re-implementing Oracle 12.1.3 revamping the existing PeopleSoft instances. The Organization & Accounting (GL Code Combination) were to be re-structured, and all current and historical transactions transformed  into the new Accounting structure. The volume of the 15 years Historical data was quite high.

The conversion included Customers, Banks, Sales Orders, AR Invoices, AR Receipts, AR Direct Debits and Oracle Advanced Collections. Also, financial data such as GL Balances, GL Details, AR Invoices and AP Invoices had to be migrated from PeopleSoft application into Oracle EBS R12.1.3 application along with master data such as Customers and Suppliers.

Business Situation

Data conversion in previous projects was done manually - an effort that yielded mixed results. The complexity of the ‘Hotel Collect’ project meant business users & IT teams were required to spend more time than they had on their hands at delivering the project. This called for the introduction of a migration platform like dataZap.

Given the fact that the online business operates 24/7, the down time/cut over time for implementation had to be kept to as low as  ten hours which was very critical.

They also wanted to retire their PeopleSoft application which holds their financial data, and move open transactions into new Oracle EBS R12.1.3 application.

Technical Situation

Volume of Oracle EBS R12.1.3 data was extremely high. Especially voluminous were Sales Orders. The conversion was always a high risk effort, given the short cutover of ten hours. The migration efforts included data across seventeen entities that included AR Direct Debits and Oracle Advanced Collections. Data quality was low, and the high number of data duplicates meant that data quality had to be constantly monitored.

Yet, the biggest challenge was posed by the need to migrate closed historical transactions dating back to almost 15 years!


dataZap was deployed as the single, enterprise-wide platform to manage data and setup migrations. Some of the biggest advantages of using dataZap included:

  • Fast implementation. In twelve weeks, seventeen entities were migrated with a total  whopping time savings of 80%.
  • Twenty percent improvement in data quality by deploying dataZen and dataZense. Also the tools helped to keep data clean.
